Hiking poles offer many advantages and are nowadays almost part of the basic equipment of any hiking trip. On the descent, hiking and trekking poles provide the necessary support, relieve the knees and provide safety in rough terrain. On the ascent, these help with weight distribution and support the muscles.
The practical helpers are available in various materials and designs. Most trekking poles are adjustable in length and can be transported in a space-saving way. So-called telescopic poles can be easily pushed together or out and can be fixed with a screw system or clamps. In the case of folding poles, on the other hand, the individual elements are connected with a robust cable, which means that the individual elements can simply be plugged together during assembly. Especially when weight must be saved, this variant is preferred. While the construction influences the weight of a trekking pole, the material used also plays a decisive role here. Most manufacturers use aluminum or carbon. Carbon poles are lighter than the aluminum models and are also used for trail running, among other things.
In addition to the classic hiking poles, a wide selection of Nordic walking poles can be found in the range. Walking poles usually have a fixed length and tend to have narrower handles compared to a classic hiking pole. There are also differences in the loop or strap. While the strap plays a subordinate role in hiking poles (primarily serves to secure the poles from slipping), it sits firmly around the wrist of walking poles. As a rule, there is a right and a left strap.
