The 454 NSW Tubular for disc brakes combines the advanced aerodynamics and stability of its bionic-inspired Sawtooth rim profile with the advantages of disc brakes. This wheelset was designed for both professional racers and cyclists who prefer the proven riding characteristics of tubular tires along with cutting-edge aero technology. Using the principles of emerging bionics science, Zipp engineers studied the environment to discover how nature achieves speed, control, and efficiency. The swift and graceful movements of a humpback whale are supported by tubercles on its pectoral fins. These structures inspired Zipp's development engineers to systematically apply bionics for the first time to tackle the complex challenge of designing a wheel with wavy hyperfoil nodes that reduce both air resistance and susceptibility to crosswinds. The Cognition DB V2 hub set of the 454 NSW has been redesigned with the Axial Clutch V2 for faster engagement and reduced friction, because every time a conventional freehub rolls along, the pawls act similarly to a drum brake and slow the rider down. The friction of the pawls against the hub shell is felt as a loss, especially in the realm of road bike wheels. The solution? The Cognition rear hub with AxialClutch V2 technology reduces this resistance by disengaging the engagement mechanism during coasting phases. The wave spring of the AxialClutch V2 quickly and smoothly activates the engagement mechanism as soon as the rider pedals. The hub set is also lightweight and durable.
