The GXP system does not rely on lateral pressure to adjust the bearing play like other systems do; instead, the left bearing is clamped between the bottom bracket axle and the left crank arm. This allows the right bearing to remain axially free-moving on the bottom bracket axle, preventing premature bearing wear.
