The hardness is a general guideline to recommend a wheel to a player based on their weight and skating ability. A player can choose a wheel designed for heavier or lighter skaters. This way, the player can improve and maximize their grip and/or roller skating speed. If they have advanced skating skills, they can compress the wheel sufficiently to gain grip, or they may seek softer wheels to maximize grip on skating surfaces. Choosing either option may lead to longer or premature wear.
