1. Ritter Running Metres - Laufmeter

Kurt Ryslavy, born in Graz, is a visual artist, poet, wine merchant, and "inventor of bourgeois travesty," as he describes his artistic expression. His preferred media include text, video, installation, performance, sculpture, and painting, which he develops into contextual works and sophisticated exhibition concepts. These often provocatively and humorously revolve around phenomena of perception, existing concepts of art, and the working conditions of artists. In the spirit of Ben Vautier (Art is just a matter of signature and date), Ryslavy suggests that art is merely a matter of name and price. This seems to be the dominant criterion of the art market and is considered an essential characteristic of quality and attraction. Challenging this established value system is an open challenge for the conceptually working Kurt Ryslavy, as he aims to strategically liberate art from the hierarchical dominance of the art market. For the exhibition concept "Laufmeter" at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Benedictine Abbey of Admont (2023), Ryslavy selected 16 "professorial" works from its collection, which he presented prominently. However, he juxtaposed his own paintings as an installation of a low wall covering against these works. Kurt Ryslavy plays with the perception of the viewers, the special attention and appreciation of the audience for the artworks of renowned "professor-artists," as well as the resulting irritation towards his own works, which are almost reduced to mere room decoration, thereby subverting the established system of the art market focused on name and price.

2. Ritter Alles über alles

Why does the Earth rotate faster at the equator? What were aqueducts built for? Max Hofler has the answers ready: It is the acceleration forces of the nimble springbok and the spiky impala that cause the ground to spin, and in the high pipes, Lambrusco and Veltliner were once meant to flow for the haute volée. These are the questions from the Trivial Pursuit game that Hofler uses in Everything About Everything as a starting point for speculations about the nature of the world, formulated in a strictly formulaic manner and always as counter-questions. The canon of largely useless knowledge has become ineffective as a distinguishing feature of so-called elites. Max Hofler lets this dissipate in grotesque explanations and drives out the educational pretentiousness of its bearers. A hybrid artistic language, which exploits the creative energy of the idioms of tough guys, petty bourgeois poseurs, and catchphrase merchants of private TV, usurps the pedagogical German of the social game. New Zealand fighting sheep and berserker penguins tackle the topic of post-factuality, and various clickbaits and images that take aim at us readers expose hierarchies of knowledge generation. Everything About Everything offers as much extravagant entertainment as it does deconstruction, and even more: When the encyclopedist explains the origin of the red color of the Golden Gate Bridge with the blood toll that the workers paid during its construction, he touches on knowledge formations that are not only swept under the rug in trivial party games.

3. Ritter Die Kunst des Lesens. Sebastian Kiefers Lektu¨ren

The literature and music scholar Sebastian Kiefer has maintained a unique position in German-language journalism for years. He has developed his own art of meticulous reading and seeks to demonstrate that the demands placed on poetic language and experience, as held by Goethe, Hölderlin, or Eichendorff, can only be vividly repeated or newly formulated in advanced texts today. "Reading," in Kiefer's sense, is the opposite of conventional "interpretation": it is not about extracting supposed poetic statements, as everything one can say about the world or oneself can also be expressed without art. Genuine poetic experiences of self, world, and language can only be made through the interplay and opposition of various kinds of feelings, thoughts, and perceptions in practical reading. For Kiefer, reading is the art of refining, observing, and experiencing these different mental activities. Knowledge of historical modes of expression and concepts of knowledge is as essential as a refinement of attention to the play of sensations and the nuances of the phenomena that present themselves. The essays gathered here follow Kiefer's reading movements in his central investigations of texts from German classics to the neo-avant-garde. Homages from authors whose aesthetic positions are relevant to Sebastian Kiefer complete the volume.
