1. J.B. Metzler König:Performative Figures of Queer Mas

This is a German history of cinema and film from the 1890s to 1945 with a focus on queer masculinity. Using media studies approaches, the study shows how film as a new medium is constituted through performative re-enactments of spectacular elements from the entertainment and knowledge cultures of the 19th century. In it, bodies, desires, and identities are constantly remodeled through the formation of difference. Therefore, male queerness here does not mean the representation of male homosexuality. Rather, it is the dynamic result of complex medial processes, affects, and (self-)knowledge on and off the screen. Building on Eve K. Sedgwick's queer-feminist concept of queer performativity, the author creates a historically situated model with which she traces various figures of technically anthropomorphic queer masculinity in the medium of film in an empowering sense. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition "Performative Figuren queerer Männlichkeit" by Christiane König, published by J.B. Metzler, imprint of Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. The author, with the friendly support of Megan Hanson, has subsequently revised the text further in an endeavor to refine the work stylistically. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support authors.

7. J.B. Metzler Liberale Eugenik?

Applications of genetic diagnostics and reproductive medicine allow prospective parents to increasingly influence the genetic makeup of their offspring. Such liberal eugenics is now also supported in philosophy and bioethics. But where do the origins of such thinking lie, and how should comprehensive reproductive freedom be assessed? Based on a liberal ethics framework, the study provides an inherent critique of liberal eugenics and develops its own position on how to handle new genetic engineering possibilities.

8. J.B. Metzler Chaos und Zufälligkeit

Chaos and randomness are contrasted in two theoretical scientific domains that have so far been discussed independently in different disciplines: on one hand, in chaos theory and more generally in the theory of dynamic systems, and on the other hand, in probability theory and later in algorithm theory. The comparison clarifies to what extent one can truly speak of random behavior in chaotic systems. While this has often been intuitively assumed to be correct, it has remained unclear what such behavior actually means.

9. J.B. Metzler Lentzsch:Roma victa

"Roma Victa" by Simon Lentzsch offers an in-depth analysis of Roman history, particularly how Roman society dealt with defeats. While the military successes of the Roman Republic often take center stage, this work highlights the less noticed but equally important aspects of Roman defeats against the Celts, Samnites, and Carthaginians. Lentzsch examines how these defeats were interpreted and explained in the historical culture of the Republic and the early Imperial period. Through the analysis of texts, monuments, and rituals, the book demonstrates how the Romans developed a specific culture to cope with their failures and how they assigned a place to these events in their history. This study is significant not only for history enthusiasts but also provides valuable insights into Roman identity and the self-understanding of the Roman elite.

10. J.B. Metzler Otto:The Theater of Electricity

Since the 1880s, electrical energies began circulating in European theaters, generated from fossil fuels in urban power plants. A mysterious force, which some still regarded as a romantic life force while others saw it as a symbol of progress, entered performance venues. Engineering knowledge, control techniques, and supply chains fundamentally changed how theater was created and perceived. The mechanical image machine from Renaissance and Baroque times was transformed into a thermodynamic engine. Modern theater emerged as electrified theater. This book aims to trace what happened backstage before the Avantgarde took to the front stage, proposing to write the genealogy of theater's modernity as a cultural history of theater technology.
