8. Paperblanks Kara-ori (Japanese Kimono) Ultra Unlined Journal
This kimono design, made from silk dyed with Beni – a pigment derived from the petals of the safflower – and lacquered with gold, originates from the Edo period (1615-1868). It was originally used as a costume for the Noh theater form. Karaori specifically refers to the exquisitely embroidered women's kimono for which traditional Noh theater was known. Both the material itself and the depicted pattern contributed to telling the story of the character. In this case, the stiff brocade creates a thick, shiny fabric that is not easily draped, resulting in an angular effect that evokes the spirit of a noblewoman. The pattern of blooming grasses emphasizes the femininity of the figure. During the Meiji period (1868-1912), Noh reached such heights that it became widely known beyond the country's borders, and today there are still more than 70 Noh theaters throughout Japan. This beautiful example of Karaori costumes can now be found at the Art Institute of Chicago. It is a great pleasure for us to work with such a beautiful and culturally significant piece of history to create this journal design.
