In autumn, six men of different ages gather to play chess in the Engadin. The theme of aging, possible alternatives, or a self-limiting life over time increasingly becomes an emotional confrontation. The men are shaped by their various professions and life paths, making the confrontations seem inevitable. After the death of a chess player, a new person joins the men's circle: a woman. She enriches the life of one player and broadens the discussions. When one of the men faces the choice of completely surrendering to medicine or ending his life, the dialogues become even more poignant. New ideas emerge that advocate for a self-determined life, harvesting, and dying. The novel seeks to foster understanding among readers who grapple with questions of aging and the current culture of dying.
