Zwischen Bischof und NS-Staat: Das Breslauer 'Katholische Sonntagsblatt' im Dritten Reich (1933

For almost half a century, from 1895 to 1941, the "Katholisches Sonntagsblatt" or (since 1938) the "Bistumsblatt" of the diocese (since 1930 archdiocese) of Breslau was published and fulfilled its mission of pastoral care and religious education in what was then still German Catholic Silesia. This book deals with the fact that the years from 1933 until its forced closure in 1941 were to be a test for this diocese and its diocesan newspaper. For the editors, the period of the Third Reich was a tightrope walk between conformity and religiously motivated opposition to National Socialism, as well as between the standards set by diocesan bishop Adolf Bertram and the conditions dictated by the Nazi state. The Diözesanblatt tried to fulfil its mission to the very end - and yet the structure and content of the conservative paper changed fundamentally. This work examines this change in detail - and at the same time provides an important article on the history of the Wroclaw diocese as well as the contemporary history of the church in Germany during its darkest period.
