The city of Lucerne was one of the most important centers of Swiss theater culture during the late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. The over 160-year tradition of the Lucerne Easter play is hardly matched even in an international comparison, and the splendid performance of 1583 undoubtedly represents the most advanced theatrical achievement in the entire history of medieval German-language drama. Notably, the rich documentation of this tradition is also remarkable: A wealth of texts, stage directions, information about techniques and staging, stage plans, costume lists, cast lists, songbooks with music, and detailed accounts, collected and archived by Lucerne's city clerk and director Renward Cysat, allows for theater historical insights of unparalleled depth. This work will address this.
