When discussing the goals of the social pedagogical work practiced in youth residential communities, the concept of independence is a frequently used buzzword that often remains undefined or is not broken down into complex forms. Considering the adolescent target group and their life stage, this goal represents one of the most important aspects and should be examined more closely. So what does it mean to be independent? What skills and abilities should young people acquire to be considered independent or to lead an independent life? What content-related and methodological requirements arise for social pedagogical work to prepare the youth accordingly? Through theoretical considerations and two practical examples from Berlin, this book attempts to answer these core questions. It is aimed at social pedagogues and educators working in residential child and youth services.
