Abstract: In the first half of our century, during World War I and later, a controversial group of poets emerged, led by Ungaretti, whose poetry, due to its serious and dark tone, was labeled poesia ermetica. A discussion arose about whether this could be considered true poetry, and the judgments were negative: the poetry was deemed incomprehensible and very difficult to grasp. However, this criticism soon divided into two camps. Benedetto Croce, the greatest literary critic, represented those who completely rejected this type of poetry based on aesthetic distinctions and classified it as non-poetry.
