In his moving account, Michael Wieck describes the Königsberg of his childhood and youth. He tells of the rule of National Socialism and describes the destruction of Königsberg by Allied bombing in World War II and the siege by the Red Army. As the son of a non-Jewish father and a Jewish mother, he experienced exclusion, the loss of all security and the deportation of friends and relatives during National Socialism. With the capture of Königsberg, Michael Wieck was imprisoned in the Soviet internment camp Rothenstein. During the Nazi regime, his non-Jewish father provided protection; after the end of the war, the son's courage and resourcefulness alone saved his parents. Michael Wieck found strength and comfort in his music, which had become his vocation early on.

Wieck's sensitively and stirringly written memoirs are a fascinating document of contemporary history and the history of Königsberg.
