Doctor and biochemist Catherine Shanahan was once a top runner. After suffering repeated injuries, she decided to embark on her own quest for healing. She explored dietary patterns from around the world that have been shown to help people live longer and healthier lives—such as the Mediterranean diet, the diet of the Okinawa island group, and other so-called Blue Zones. She identified four traditional eating habits that have reliably ensured strong, healthy, and intelligent children as well as active, vital older adults across generations. These four strategies form the foundation of the diet that Dr. Shanahan refers to as the "Human Diet": fresh and fermented foods, sprouts, cooked meat on the bone, and organ meats. Foods are not all produced in the same way. Real food.
