Product details
A city is like a living organism - constantly undergoing change. It's hard to imagine what Munich once looked like in many places. The new book "Time Travel Munich" extensively explores the transformation of Munich's cityscape. On each double page, a historical view faces a current photo of the same location for direct comparison. This book recalls the old Munich that has been photographically documented since the mid-19th century. The past and forgotten elements confront the present state. To enable direct comparison, today's photos were taken from as similar a perspective as possible to the historical images. Naturally, there have also been architectural changes between the images. The building as seen in a historical photo was not always followed by the structure visible today. It has been expanded, remodeled, demolished, and rebuilt. The bomb damage had a particularly significant impact on the cityscape - but the so-called second destruction of Munich in the 1950s and 1960s also played a role, as many things that survived the war were deemed "old junk" and left to the wrecking ball. The main focus of "Time Travel Munich" is on the old town, its streets, squares, and corners. However, small detours also lead to the old suburbs - Isar, Ludwig, Maxvorstadt, and Lehel - as well as to incorporated areas like Giesing, Haidhausen, Schwabing, Neuhausen, or Au. Practical overview maps with page numbers make navigation easier and invite readers to take a walk along the route. The successful predecessor: "Munich Before - After." Our perennial bestseller "Munich Before - After," the first city comparison from Hirschkäfer Verlag, has seen four editions. The title has been out of print since autumn 2019. With "Time Travel Munich," we continue this success.
