14-year-old Yusuke Urameshi is a rebel who causes trouble everywhere and has few prospects for the future. However, when he saves a child from death one day, Yusuke pays a high price, as his heroic act costs him his own life. This act, so uncharacteristic for him, even surprises the prince of the underworld, Koenma. Instead of crossing the gates to the afterlife, Yusuke is given the chance to undergo a test that offers him the possibility of returning to the world of the living.
