The fact that people overcome borders in search of a better life is a historical norm, just as is the attempt to prevent them from doing so, either entirely or partially, depending on calculations. Is there any reasonable justification for limiting immigration? Who has the right to set these limitations? Many of the contributions gathered here call for global freedom of settlement with equal social rights. However, as clear as the demand for global freedom of settlement may seem at first glance, it is not so straightforward when considering the perspective of its implementation. It involves controversies and raises questions that we aim to capture in this volume, such as: Is it sensible and legitimate to focus on 'transitional steps' that inherently produce new regulations and border delineations on the way to open borders? If so, what might these look like?.
