Thesis from 2015 in the field of Media/Communication - Journalism, Public Relations, Grade: 1.0, University of Leipzig (Leipzig School of Media), Course: Introduction to New Media Journalism, Language: German.
Abstract: This paper compares four commonly used open-source content management systems to determine which is best suited as the foundation for the website of a non-specified regional daily newspaper. A catalog of potential requirements was developed to serve as the basis for selecting the optimal system.
After considering user numbers and distribution in the German-speaking region and internationally, the CMSs WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, and Typo3 were selected for comparison. Each CMS was individually assessed and compared against each requirement from the developed catalog, including a brief description, technical details, usage examples, and any other noteworthy points.
Sources included, where possible, the technical documentation and support of each CMS, online data collections, and specialized books in the fields of IT and journalism. The comparison concludes that Drupal is the most suitable for use in a regional newspaper due to its ease of use and comprehensive rights management. Additional important features can be implemented by creating custom modules, without overwhelming the system with excessive functionality, allowing it to serve as an effective foundation with minimal training effort.
