In 1923, Zürcher Freilager AG was founded to build and operate a customs-free warehouse in Zurich-Albisrieden. For many decades, the Zürcher Freilager was one of the largest centers for goods storage and transit trade in Switzerland, evolving with the changing needs of its customers. Fifty years ago, Embraport was established in Embrach, a freight transport center located near Zurich Airport and the German border, directly connected to the rail and road networks. While the Zurich site shifted towards residential properties in the early 21st century, and since 2016, the new urban district Freilager Zurich has been built and operated according to strict sustainability criteria, Embraport is currently being transformed into one of the most modern and sustainable logistics hubs in Switzerland, developing a variety of visionary services. This book explores the dynamic history of Zürcher Freilager AG and outlines the forward-looking models that the company is adopting at both locations, featuring many atmospheric photos, various interviews, and comprehensive texts on the company’s history and future challenges.
