When her parents embark on a long sea voyage, Bonnie stays behind at Willoughby Chase with her cousin Sylvia. It is the harshest winter in years, snowstorms rage, and wolves howl at night, but the girls feel safe in the castle. Miss Slighcarp, a distant relative, is supposed to look after them, but she has nothing in mind but to seize the castle and all its riches for herself. She dismisses the staff, sells the furniture, and even wears Bonnie's mother's clothes. And it gets worse: one day she tells Bonnie that her parents have died in a shipwreck and sends both girls to an orphanage. The conditions there are terrible. There is not even enough food. Bonnie and Sylvia manage to escape. Together with the gooseherd Simon, they set off for London to find Sylvia's Aunt Jane. Will they ever be able to return to Willoughby Chase?.
