Author's Text
John (Winslow) Irving, born on March 2, 1942, in Exeter, New Hampshire, as the oldest of four children. John Irving's father was a teacher and a specialist in Russian history and literature. Irving spent his childhood in New England. In 1957, he began wrestling; by the age of 19, Irving knew what he wanted to be: a wrestler and a novelist. He studied English literature at the universities of New Hampshire and Iowa, where he later served as a guest lecturer in the writers' workshop. He took a German course at Harvard. From 1963 to 1964, he stayed in Vienna. In 1964, he returned to the United States. He worked as a teacher at schools and universities until 1979. He currently lives in Toronto and southern Vermont. In 1992, Irving was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and in 2000, he received an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film adaptation of his novel "The Cider House Rules," directed by Lasse Hallström.

Blurb
Love and death, passion and transience, reality and fiction are the poles between which the pulse of John Irving's new novel beats. At its center is the writer Ruth Cole, a strong and vulnerable woman who finds success with her books but struggles with her friendships. Stunningly funny and deeply moving.
