This volume contains Max Weber's two famous lectures from 1917 and 1919.
Weber's texts describe the difficulties of both scientific careers and political activity between profession and vocation. Of lasting influence are his provisions on the value-free nature of science and the introduction of the distinction between ethics of mind and ethics of responsibility.
Both lectures are classic texts in the cultural and social sciences. They have significantly influenced the discussion on the meaning of science in industrial society and politics in mass democracy. In addition to the lectures, this volume also contains their prefaces and a detailed introduction.
This volume is published on the occasion of utb's 50th anniversary as volume 5000 and at the same time in the year that marks the 100th anniversary of Max Weber's death.
