Jakob, an orphan, was raised in a monastery and taken by robbers at a young age after they raided the monastery. From then on, he had to live with the robbers until they were captured and hanged. The lord of the manor spared his life on the condition that he would work for him. Jakob fell in love with a maid, which was forbidden, and was severely punished, ultimately killing the lord in self-defense. To escape his pursuers, Jakob joined Tilly's army as a mercenary. In the final battle, at the end of the war, he lost his voice from a blow to the head. After the war, Jakob found work on a farm and befriended Max, the twelve-year-old son of the farmer. When Max was kidnapped by jugglers, Jakob set out to pursue them after harvesting the crops. Many scenes in this book are harsh and brutal, reflecting the times during and after the Thirty Years' War. As a result, human attributes such as love, friendship, loyalty, faith, and hope are particularly highlighted.
