When parents consent to infant observation, there are conscious motives that they can name. Far more important, however, are their unconscious motives, which provide insight into their hopes, their ability and their obstacles to being "good enough parents". In the first encounter before birth, a relationship dynamic already develops between the parents-to-be and the observer, which becomes visible in the way the topic of observing, the person observing and the setting are dealt with. The articles focus on how the unconscious aspect of parental motives can be made visible through the analysis of memory protocols. Based on the insight that the setting of infant observation reinforces the parents' idea of the value of their intuitive parenting ability already in the first interview, the articles provide assistance in approaching the experience of parents and thus supporting them in a more appreciative and targeted way.
