Both Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) describe the spatial world around us in digital form. Both fields have existed for over 30 years. Modern IT now enables their symbiosis for the first time, with sometimes astonishing effects. BIM data represents a new raw material for the GIS industry, particularly in the modeling of 3D city models - that is, in the area of City Information Modeling (CIM). On the other hand, existing GIS data can significantly contribute to achieving better planning and thus better decisions in construction projects, especially in infrastructure projects. This book provides a valuable foundation for the integration of BIM and GIS. It offers a comprehensive introduction to the key aspects of BIM on one side and the technical fundamentals and application areas of GIS on the other.
