Under the influence of the division of Germany, both popular and elite sport developed under different guises. While sport in the West was primarily anchored in the club system, it was organised by the state in the East. In the context of major international events such as the Olympic Games or World Championships, the two sporting systems clashed and became representatives in the competition between the political systems.
