The industrialization of the 19th century led to quantum leaps in weapon technology and a dramatic increase in the combat power of Western militaries. While the armies fought at Waterloo in 1815 with flintlock muskets and muzzle-loading cannons, a hundred years later, mass armies faced each other in World War I with long-range repeaters, machine guns, and rapid-fire artillery. This technological advancement in weaponry is also credited with the peak of European colonial empires in Africa and Asia. However, aside from the colonial conflicts, the 19th century between Waterloo and World War I is considered a peaceful era marked by temporally and spatially limited conflicts. This book aims to outline the military developments in the Western world during the 19th century and to question existing interpretative patterns. It becomes evident that the first half of the 19th century was significantly more conflict-ridden than often portrayed, both in Europe and on the American continents, where new Western-style states emerged that fought prolonged wars against each other. The volume also questions the role of modern weapon technology in the conquest of Western colonial empires and emphasizes that improvements in logistics and communication may have played an even greater role. The common portrayal of World War I is also reexamined through comparisons with other contemporary Western conflicts, such as the Mexican Revolution, the Balkan Wars, or the Russian Civil War, shedding new light on the subject. "Western Warfare 1775-1923" is a compact and complex representation of a time full of conflicts and military innovations that casts new light on many developments.
