The essence of the Garou
The Garou are warriors of Gaia. Part human, part wolf, and part ghost, they resemble what humans call werewolves, but they are so much more. Even if most of them are born as humans or wolves, that condition does not last. The wolf-born receive a spark of human intelligence after their transformation, while those born human must learn to deal with the instincts of the hunter and the burning desire to be part of the pack. The wretched creatures who are the children of two werewolves grow up without ever knowing anything else, giving them a unique view of the world. In addition to their changeable bodies and warrior minds, each Garou has the blessings of the spirit world that grant them the power to fight for Gaia.

Ways of the Changer describes what it is to be a werewolf, both on a personal level and as part of a pack. It details the sensation of bones mending after a break, the senses available in all forms, and the sudden, head-surging intoxication of the gifts and rites that the spirits bestow. It also explores what it means to be a Lupus or Metis werewolf, characters whose experiences are alien to any human. It illustrates the various ways werewolves organize into packs and how those packs function as groups of warriors rather than imitating the behavior of wolves.
