In his novel "Heinrich von Ofterdingen," Novalis created the symbol of the "blue flower," emblematic of Romanticism itself. His "Hymns to the Night" are arguably the most significant poetry of early German Romanticism. The young poet embedded his symbolically multifaceted literary works in a well-developed philosophical foundation: through the "romanticization of the world," a "universal poetry" was to be created.
