When Slavko Grum died in 1949 at the age of just 48, he left behind a literary body of work that had received little attention until then. The practicing physician wrote and published primarily between 1920 and 1935. His short prose initially appeared exclusively in periodicals. Of his many plays, only four have survived, and two were publicly recognized during his lifetime. Today, they are considered foundational texts of 20th-century Slovenian literature. It was not until the 1950s that Slavko Grum's literary works were rediscovered. Since 1976, his complete works have been available in a series of annotated editions published by the Slovenian state publisher. However, it took another thirty years for Grum's prose to be published in German ("Das weisse Asyl," translated by Erwin Köstler, Edition Thanhäuser 2006). The dramas are now accessible in German for the first time in this new edition by Erwin Köstler. The juxtaposition of prose and plays reveals that Slavko Grum developed his own distinct poetics through a close intertwining of the two genres. He was the first Slovenian author to literarily utilize insights from psychoanalysis. His work is associated with Expressionism and Symbolism. Distortions, paradoxes, shifts in perspective, and a blend of colloquial, highly expressive, surreal, and dreamlike sequences are typical of his texts, which also contain numerous references to Grum's real life. The collected works are presented in two volumes housed in a fine cardboard slipcase. It includes, as in the narrative volume "Das weisse Asyl," the 27 literary prose texts (the translation has been revised by Erwin Köstler), but does not include Grum's letters and lectures, nor the four surviving plays, introductions, and literary apparatus.
