"This was the first prank and the next will follow immediately": his illustrated stories have become commonplace, his rhymes proverbial. Wilhelm Busch drew and described his fellow human beings with sympathy, but incorruptibly and without mincing his words: their attitudes, greed, frivolity and ruthlessness. As a "serious painter" he was denied greater recognition and prestige, but as an author and graphic artist he became one of the most widely read artists in Germany and soon advanced to become a classic of comic literature. Important illustrators, authors and comic artists have named him as their role model. This volume offers a small ABC of his famous aphorisms from Max and Moritz or Pious Helen, from Maler Klecksel and Balduin Bählamm, supplemented with his best-known poems and aphorisms. The volume is rounded off with an extract from his autobiographical sketch Von mir über mich: "Talking is good for people, if you do it yourself.".
