Everything revolves around a monstrous octopus, a giant squid. When it touches a deep-sea cable, its arms and tentacles begin to tell their stories. They recount what it is like to live in constant darkness and to be a monster for humans. They tell of Sanja, who is doing an internship on a freezer trawler and takes care of a captured squid. They speak of Dagmar, who is stationed for a secret service in Antarctica and is supposed to smuggle this squid to Germany unnoticed. They share stories of a childhood as a shepherd's daughter and of a family whose ancestor once fought a squid. They recount the young Jules Verne, who hears about this battle and begins to write about it. In the end, they tell how difficult it is for humans to narrate the stories of animals and why they do it anyway.
