Animals are becoming disposable items in industrialized Western society. Countless animals end up in shelters, rescue stations, or sanctuaries each year. Or, if they are not fortunate, at the slaughterhouse. The reasons for their fate are varied. Overwhelmed owners who are unfamiliar with the exotic species but were ultimately just looking for a nice decoration for their living room. Pets that become a burden and are then discarded somewhere. Particularly during the pandemic, many acquired pets without being aware of the long-term consequences. Shelters are fuller than ever. The animals living under human care are completely dependent on them, whether it’s cold outside or tempting holidays are just around the corner. Yet some forget the responsibilities that come with acquiring a living being, as the allure can be too tempting. However, the suffering that ensues is hard to bear. Many look away, and some don’t want to know anything about it at all. This book features all kinds of characters, from brave sheep to wild birds and quick rats. But all of them have experienced trauma and carry their scars. Some are clearly visible, while others carry them invisibly within.
