In the training of mechanical engineers and production technicians, lubricants are only dealt with to the extent that they exist and have an influence on the tribological systems. There is no in-depth study of the complex chemical relationships involved. This book sheds light on the 'dark' side of tribology and explains the function of the 'intermediate material'. To this end, the existing literature is critically analysed. Models are also presented. The monograph helps the reader to gain a better understanding of the interactions on the metal surface and in the surface layer of components.
