We Are Special

"We are special" is a book that wonderfully honors the organization that has been advocating for people with so-called intellectual disabilities for decades: Special Olympics. What such a disability means becomes clear on every page of this book. The magic word is inclusion. In this wonderful project, which traces the history of Special Olympics, the athletes reflect on their careers and share the unforgettable moment when they gave their all on the way to a medal. We meet extraordinary individuals and their courage. In the portraits taken by Olympic champion and photographer Iouri Podladtchikov, we see joy, pride, self-confidence, and a will to win. In the foreword, Federal Councilor Viola Amherd writes, among other things, the beautiful sentence: "The power of sports makes the unimaginable possible." And what the athletes, together with their coaches, achieve far from the spotlight is indeed unimaginable. In "We are special," they, who often stand on the sidelines in everyday life, receive the recognition they more than deserve. For with their fire sacré, they prove: "Special is not how you were born; special is what you make of it.".
