WBV Vorhang auf: Die Heilige Familie in der Malerei

The Holy Family is a common and significant motif in painting. This overview work analyzes more than 1,300 images to discuss the most important artistic themes and forms, as well as to explain patterns. The art historical development of the representation of the Holy Family is described alongside common image contents and stylistic devices. The overview provides a foundation for personal research, study, or lesson planning. For each topic covered, a comprehensive table appendix lists image examples and additional sources. After explanations of the concept of family and its depiction in sacred art, artistic themes such as the birth of Christ, the flight into Egypt, or the adoration of the kings are briefly introduced. The language remains clear and understandable for both teachers and learners.
