The historical phraseology has only been addressed in its initial stages. The book concerns a writer who, alongside Heinrich Heine, Jeremias Gotthelf, and Gottfried Keller, significantly shaped the literary phraseology of the 19th century. The phraseological aspect of the 'Fontane tone' is often reduced to a preference for quotes and proverbial expressions. However, upon closer linguistic examination, it becomes evident that Theodor Fontane employs the entire range of phraseological forms (idioms, proverbs, routine formulas, etc.) for various text-forming and functional purposes, particularly for the unique crafting of dialogicity. Special attention is also given to Fontane's characteristic use of French elements.
