Barbados, 1830: The slave boy Washington Black lives and works on a sugar cane plantation under inhumane conditions until he is chosen to be the personal servant of Christopher Wilde, the brother of the brutal plantation owner. Christopher is an inventor, explorer, scientist, and opponent of slavery. The unlikely pair escapes from the plantation in a homemade hot air balloon. An adventurous flight begins, taking them halfway around the world.
