Product details

Lotti Latrous was living with her family in the Ivory Coast when the AIDS virus was killing millions all over the world, but especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Aziz, her husband, was working for a major Swiss corporation at the time, their three children were at school, and Lotti did what she had to do: help those who suffered most from the disease. The poorest of the poor. Together with her husband, she opened an outpatient clinic in Adjouffou, a slum in the economic metropolis of Abidjan, and fetched the sick from their miserable huts with her own hands. She was late a thousand times over. But together with her staff - most of whom were HIV-infected themselves - she was also able to save many lives. Not for long, first a hospital for the dying and a little later an orphanage were added. At regular intervals, Lotti visited her family, who were now living in Cairo. Her guilty conscience for staying in Abidjan and taking care of "foreign" children instead of her own plagued her day and night. She feels that the fact that the family is still intact today is the greatest gift. Another gift is that - after a personal crisis - she found her way back to her aid organization and it developed in a way she never imagined in her wildest dreams. She is absolutely convinced that "even if we often don't understand a lot of things, in the end everything makes sense."
