The term 'text' is examined in variations and from different points of view. In addition to the most important text theories from linguistics, the text views in philosophy, semiotics, theology and jurisprudence are discussed. The volume contributes with different aspects to the approach of an interdisciplinary text theory. The concept of 'text' forms the theoretical and empirical basis of all humanities and cultural studies. Each discipline designs its own perspective on the concept of text. So far, no integrative approach of an interdisciplinary text theory has been established. In linguistics, 'text' is a central basic concept, but no unified and binding definition exists for it. The concept is too extensive and significant to be subsumed under a simple definitional formula. Different approaches focus on different aspects of the concept of text, each developing its own criteria for defining it. In this volume, the basic concept of 'text' is examined in variations and from different points of view. In addition to the basics and the most important theories of text from linguistics, the conceptions of text in philosophy, semiotics, theology, and jurisprudence are discussed. The individual contributions present the textual views of the respective disciplines, but at the same time also show similarities and differences to neighboring disciplines. They thus contribute with different aspects to the approach of an interdisciplinary text theory.
