Few professions evoke such ambivalent feelings as criminal defense: When criminal defense secures an acquittal for an innocent person, it is admired. However, when it advocates for the rights of a serious criminal, the recurring question arises as to how one can defend such a person.

Until now, there has been no introduction to the practice and craft of criminal defense specifically related to Switzerland. This book fills a central gap. It is not primarily aimed at seasoned professionals, but also, and especially, at newcomers to the profession, students, and a broadly interested audience.

Stephan Bernard's vivid explanations are based on his previous publications on criminal defense in both specialized and general media. However, they are at least equally grounded in his personal practical and experiential knowledge gained from over 15 years of extensive criminal defense practice.
