Product details

There wasn't enough money for new clothes. So the women sewed and patched the holes in the worn-out garments. The boys, in particular, had an insatiable hunger. They could devour a loaf of bread in a single day. Fortunately, the family had their own oven. Normally, it was lit once a month to bake bread, sheet cakes, or meat. Because the four boys, along with their father and grandfather, ate so much, the women now had to bake bread every week. Like barnstormers, the young boys stuffed one wedge of bread after another into their mouths. They were also quite envious of each other's food. Barbara and her mother held the family together. Years passed, and the family's grandfather died. A year later, the grandmother also passed away. Maria and Hans started school. In winter, the oven had to be lit. Every schoolchild brought two or three pieces of wood to the classroom at the beginning of the lesson. The teacher quickly noticed that Maria was very attentive. The twins learned to write on a small slate. With a stylus, they could initially record what they had learned. A sponge was used to wipe away what had been written. In a village like Augsfeld, there was only one classroom. The oldest students had to heat the oven. All children, from 1st to 7th grade, were taught by one teacher. A lesson lasted 55 minutes, followed by a 5-minute break. In the morning, the students were taught for 4 hours, and in the afternoon for 2 hours. Classes also took place on Saturdays. Because there were too many students, classes were taught in shifts. In the first two periods, grades 5, 6, and 7 were taught. These students then had to sit on the floor in a side room for two hours to complete their assignments. After that, grades 1 to 4 had their turn.
