The Rheingau wine region stretches along the Rhine between Wiesbaden and Lorch. It is a land of Riesling, and it was here, nearly 250 years ago, that the late harvest wine was invented. The charm of this ancient cultural landscape is enhanced by many picturesque wine towns, as well as old monasteries and castles that are beautifully nestled within the vineyards.

Rheinhessen is the largest and oldest wine-growing region in Germany. The vineyards between Alzey, Worms, Mainz, and Bingen primarily cultivate Silvaner, along with the red wine variety Dornfelder. A thousand gentle hills, known here as Hiwwel, Mediterranean-style shelters (Trulli), and grapevines as far as the eye can see – this is a perfect place for hiking.

The Bergstrasse is the smallest wine-growing region in Germany. While it may still be chilly elsewhere, the almond blossoms begin to bloom here. Predominantly dry and semi-dry wines are produced in this area.

Each hike features a reliable route description, a map excerpt with the marked route, and an elevation profile. GPS tracks are also available for download. The authors provide tips on selected wineries and recommend places to stop: in estate taverns, wine shops, and rustic wine taverns, as well as wine festivals held in many wine towns.
