Walther von Arx was born on December 4, 1852, as the son of a master tanner in Olten. After attending primary and district school, he entered the gymnasium in Solothurn. In the autumn of 1872, he moved to Leipzig to attend the highly regarded university of the time, where he studied linguistics and literary history for three years, focusing particularly on the works of the classics, especially the writings of Lessing. In 1875, he studied Old and Modern French literature in Paris and took a position as a private tutor in southern France. In 1877, he was elected by the government council of the canton of Solothurn to the district school in Olten, and the following year he received a position as a German teacher at the cantonal school in Solothurn. For 44 years until his death, he excellently taught the German language and literature, staged plays by Goethe and Schiller with the students, and wrote festive plays for which his colleague Edmund Wyss composed the music. We owe von Arx not only festive plays, prologues, and speeches – his biographies of the Solothurn writers Alfred Hartmann and Franz Krutter, as well as of Gottfried Keller, also bring us closer to the literary creation of the 19th century. He deserves credit for ensuring that many works did not fall into complete oblivion. Von Arx was an indefatigable creator. His lectures in the pottery society, in municipal associations, in teacher associations, as well as in the Lukas, Valentin, and Margrithen brotherhoods were educational, but also witty and humorous, as were his contributions to newspapers. His popular Solothurn letters in the Basler Nachrichten bore the stamp of his own personality. For a short time, he was also politically active, but he soon realized that the work of a cantonal councilor could not satisfy him.
