Two young people in post-war Finland are searching for community amidst ruins and new beginnings, class differences, and reconciliation. Finland in the 1940s. Vilho and Elsa's dreams are modest but not easy to fulfill. Coming from poor backgrounds, they could not attend higher school, and Vilho returns from the war injured. He has lost his left hand, which also weighs heavily on him emotionally: he cannot build a house with his own hands. Alongside flashbacks to Vilho's and Elsa's origins as well as Vilho's war experiences, the novel tells the story of how the young couple wants to build their future: Vilho and Elsa move to a town with a paper mill, whose chimney rises into the sky as a symbol of prosperity that everyone can share. Vilho has to work hard, but his disability overwhelms him. Pride, defiance, and addiction to medication pull him into a downward spiral from which he can only escape with the help of his wife, his daughter, and his colleagues. He finds work at the company newspaper, and things gradually improve. New conflicts arise with both the management and his colleagues. "The Factory" is an intense novel about the reconstruction of Finland and the unbroken will to live. A novel that touches the soul.
