That the author of "Fräulein Else," "Dream Story," and other masterpieces, in which the characters dream artfully and meaningfully, also led a vivid dream life himself becomes immediately apparent when reading his extensive diary work: Arthur Schnitzler's records of his own dreams are among the most narratively captivating entries in his diary. Between 1921 and 1931, Schnitzler excerpted his dream notes, stylistically revised them, and added three substantial dream texts that are not included in the diary. The result is a fascinating chronicle of his inner life, a work that challenges readers to confront Freud's "The Interpretation of Dreams." Although the dream texts naturally reflect Schnitzler's own sufferings and passions, they also contain strange scenarios featuring famous contemporaries: alongside Freud, there are also Herzl, Klimt, Hofmannsthal, and Mahler.
