Although the book cover already indicates five authors, signaling that this book is not the product of a single individual, we would like to thank many more people who contributed. This includes over a hundred children and parents from Germany and the Netherlands who agreed to fulfill our research requests. Our requests were quite ambitious: we asked parents and children for extensive conversations to learn as much as possible about their lives together and their activities. By sharing detailed accounts of their lives, they allowed us to experience a small part of their world. As researchers in a field increasingly dominated by bureaucracy rather than the pursuit of knowledge, the closeness between researcher and research subject is at risk. In our conversations with parents and children, we were able to escape this danger.
