Ten years after their first joint conference in Zurich, the German, Austrian, and Swiss Sociological Societies held another three-country congress. Under the title "Borderless Society?", it took place from September 14 to 18, 1998, in Freiburg im Breisgau. Not only modern societies, but also the presentations at this congress broke boundaries. For the first time, the texts published here reached a total volume that could not be contained in a single volume. This was due to the increased number of presentations during the congress, rather than the length of the individual manuscripts: the authors are to be thanked for adhering to the strict limits set for their texts. This double volume contains a total of 113 contributions, including the opening speeches.
