Against the backdrop of demographic change and increasing pressure for reform on the welfare state, the so-called 'New Old' have come into focus in recent years as saviors of the social fabric. In this volume, authors from various generations address the tension between this programmatic approach, the resources available, and the individuality of older people. From a multidisciplinary perspective and with innovative methods of intensive observation and description, they explore whether and under what conditions the appealing idea of voluntarily involving older people in solving social problems can become a reality.
