Medical care on board ships was an even greater challenge at the beginning of the 20th century than it is today. The German Navy played a prominent political role, and special attention was also paid to the training of ship's doctors. At the Institute for Ship and Tropical Diseases, founded in Hamburg in 1900, candidates were prepared for the specific dangers and challenges of an overseas voyage. A practical handbook for ship's doctors, summarizing the key training content, was first published in 1906 by Bernhard Nocht, the chief physician of the institute and the Hamburg Seamen's Hospital.

This book is intended to serve as a preparation and guide for the young ship's doctor in his work on board. It is based on lectures I delivered in the courses for ship's doctors at the Hamburg Institute for Ship and Tropical Diseases, utilizing the experiences I gathered during my own travels and in my role as a port doctor in Hamburg.
